Kunstmuseum in The Hague is always worth a visit, but now even more due to two wonderful exhibitions: one with paintings from Francis Bacon and his contemporaries in Londen and one with photographs by Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin. For the first time, I also visited the cool Panorama Mesdag.

This year, I celebrate my 25th work anniversary at the University of Twente. We marked the occasion with food, drinks, and a pub quiz at a local brewery. I am grateful for the kind gifts from former and current colleagues, as well as the nice certificate and pin I received from the Executive Board.

Academic work can be a slow process. To illustrate: we have now had this paper published in Nature’s Scientific Reports for a political neuroscience project that received funding from my university in 2014.

For me, academic life does not get much better than this: some days in an ECPR workshop with 25 bright and kind scholars who share a research interest. I am grateful for all the insights I gained about referendums and the great people that I met, brought together by Alice el-Wakil and Daniel Kübler.

Very happy to share that the Faculty Board has appointed me as the new Head of our Public Administration department, starting in January. I’m really looking forward to this new role, above all because our group is made up of a bunch of fantastic colleagues.

These were my favourite albums on Spotify in 2025. I had never listened much to Bob Dylan, but the wonderful biopic with a brilliant Timothée Chalamet made me listen a lot to his breakthrough album. The others are a true classic by Talk Talk and recent albums by The Veils, Still Corners and Kanadia.

Na maar liefst 40 jaar te hebben gewerkt bij onze universiteit, nam collega Pieter-Jan Klok vandaag afscheid vanwege zijn welverdiende pensionering. Om dat te markeren gaf hij een afscheidscollege, gevolgd door een gezellige receptie met de huidige collega’s en veel oude bekenden.

Yesterday, our degree programme in Public Administration celebrated 25 years of fruitful collaboration with the wonderful political science colleagues in Münster. Gisteren hield onze opleiding Bestuurskunde een mooi symposium om het 25-jarig jubileum van de samenwerking met de collega’s in Münster te vieren. Grondleggers van de samenwerking Jörg Waldmann en Jaap de Wilde blikten terug op de beginjaren, met een cruciale rol voor Anke Kohl.

Dat buitenlandse media soms uit onwetendheid vragen “Wie heeft de verkiezingen in Nederland gewonnen?”, kan ik nog begrijpen. Maar aan dit soort berichtgeving in eigen land zal ik nooit wennen. Dus goed dat collega’s als @tomlouwerse.nl en @hakhverdian.bsky.social daar aandacht aan blijven schenken.

Jaren geleden had het journalistieke medium van mijn universiteit een student-columnist, waarvan ik erg onder de indruk was. Wat kon zij schrijven! Haar naam was Asha ten Broeke. Zij bleef na haar studie gelukkig schrijven, waaronder vele columns voor de Volkskrant. 1/2
