Relics reminds me of Shadow of the Beast; it's got that sort of hyper-ambitious energy to it, a game that wants to evolve side-scrolling into something more (back in 1986 - the same year Falcom's Romancia was having similar thoughts).

I don't know if it's intentional that all the characters' incessant (besides odile; obviously my choice the moment the game started) need to comment on things making fun/light of them being a total blunder and faux pas most of the time. There's so many scenes where someone feels hurt by accident
