I don't think the biggest problem is that this relief exists. The total allowance is 60k. That's just mad. You can also park 20k in your ISA, 9k in JISA per kids, 2.8k in JSIPP per kid. A family of 4 can shelter just over 183k per year from tax.

This why you should know how pensions work. If you pay into a pension, you get the 20% income tax you paid back. You pay £80 into a pension, weeks later the Gov put in another £20. Higher Rate Relief, is if you pay 40% or 45%, you also get the 20%, but then you get the other 20-25% back in cash.
