I've seen a lot of comments on how this is silly & hypocritical for a guy with lots of tattoos, but it's also potentially an attack on diversity and equal protection. One reason to be more permissive about things like facial hair is to accommodate people from a wide range of religious traditions.

As these involuntary commitment laws roll in, it's increasingly clear to me that there's no magic criteria to distinguish people-who-should-be-committed from people-who-shouldn't. Like any infringement on rights, commitment should be a last resort. All that matters is: Have we tried everything else?

Very informative. Among other things, the lack of data in this area is appalling. "We largely don’t even have simple counts as to how often psychiatric holds are happening." This is one of the most profound forms of state authority there is, and we don't even keep track of how often it's used.

FINALLY some good news.

Same usually seems to be true in the US: police generally don't seem to track how often they bring ppl to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation. I'd love to hear about exceptions. I think the use of state authority to detain someone for psychiatric evaluation should be at least count-worthy, but 🤷‍♂️

My middle schooler visited NYC for the 1st time this week & was gobsmacked by the languages, the diversity, the iguanas on peoples' shoulders, the nearly-naked people covered in body paint, the soup dumplings, the public ping pong tables, the pigeon/Dinosaur, & on & on. What a city, what a country.

I expect this will (unfortunately) sway a lot of cities & counties. The piece mentions $650M for 287(g)s, or ~$160M/year over 4 years. (COPS, the biggest-ever fed grant program for policing, distributed ~$1B/year at its peak.) If nothing else, it takes the "unfunded mandate" objection off the table.

Kudwa was elected in the fall, running as a Republican against the incumbent Dem. He doesn't seem to want to own the policy choice he's making here. There's zero reason for road patrol to contact immigration in a case like this. He's making his own community less safe, for a bullshit deportation.
