Just finished Laurence Rees's the Nazi mind which explores how populist leaders exploit human psychology and how normal people can become swayed to follow them to commit atrocities. Well worth a read, clearly lots of parallels with what is happening in much of the world at the moment.

if you can't afford clothes, it's not clothing poverty, it's poverty. If you can't afford sanitary protection, it's not period poverty, it's poverty. Divvying up poverty into little bits hides the fact that poverty is poverty and gives right-wingers an in to say "poor people need to budget better."

This is just terrible policy. A similar thing happened to me with my microsoft and skype id a few years as they detected me logging in at the airport, I was locked out for weeks till it got resolved in an endless loop of support teams and escalations that went nowhere.

One of the reasons why our employment law, tax and welfare system needs to encourage rather than discourage people having children. Also immigration has a part to play here. The lurch to the right is only adding to the demographic time bomb.
