I was hesitant about the Jays going after Santander as his profile feels like one that could age poorly, especially at 100M or whatever he wanted. That being said the deal the Jays got him on is clearly really risk averse and a really good buy even if he doesn't age that well or leaves after 3 years

I could see Alonso & Boras doing one of his 3 year deals here with an opt out in 25 & 26. Totally fine for the Jays as it helps them maximize on the 2025 season. The seem to be willing to extend for at least the time being into a top 3-5 payroll in baseball.

Santander was an absolute need for the Jays offense. Profar is way too volatile for me with massive negative to positive outcomes. If Blue Jays can do a Alonso deal with an opt out and get Scherzer I think I feel a lot better about 2025. Even if it's a temporary fix, it's a fix.

The Blue Jays FO took a 10M gamble on the Shaw trade to try and get Sasaki and failed. The same FO that earlier this year non tendered their All Star closer Romano who was set to make 7M and took Vlad to Arb over 1M last year. These guys need to pay for this incompetence

The challenge right now for the Blue Jays is they have a bad farm (around 25th), their best players are in their final season or two (vlad, bo, kirk, varsho). Their vets are old and nearly FA (springer, gausman, bassitt) and they don't have much locked up. So what exactly is the long term plan?

I don't fundamentally take issue with the Blue Jays signing Santander. They need power, badly! He is a good comp to Teoscar who has been greatly missed these last few years. I like Teo a hair more but the gap isn't big. That being said, they are currently 3 bats short on offense.
