went to Bova's in the north end yesterday and i am still contemplating with due awe the guy in multiple items of tie dye sox attire who knew the staff and greeted them with "beautiful day we're in today" a phrase so infelicitous in sort of wraps back around to good

favorite book i read this year was Passan's The Arm, a book that lives in the perfect light nonfiction category of "let's zoom in on THESE weird guys." I want a version of The Arm for every position in baseball or every injury in sports.

it actually is worth doing a lot of things that are tedious. it is hard but so is life, and in either case you die regardless. write your own emails, read your own boring books, and so on.

Using the word “faith” as a synonym for religion, which so many people do without even thinking, reifies a post-Enlightenment culturally Protestant idea of what constitutes religion.

bari weiss is in hot water, fielding accusations of both malice and incompetence, but it’s not too late for her to clear this whole thing up by sitting down for an honest, straightforward interview with isaac chotiner.

You might question her methods, but credit to Bari Weiss: her leadership has pushed 60 Minutes into new formats and attracted a bunch of new viewership outside the normal broadcast audience.

Coming back to this, I'm still struck by the implication that academics should care if the AI pushers "trust" all our work that's done without AI. I don't know, man, you all seemed to trust our work enough to steal it from us wholesale.

I have no beef whatsoever with emphasizing DIY access to any kind of technology of bodily autonomy, but I do think that if we are specifically concerned about children, we want access to medical professionals for the same reason that we don't want ear piercing to happen at home or even at Claire's

Back when I was writing regularly about baseball, circa 2012, I crunched the numbers & the likelihood of becoming a tenure-track professor in one of the MLA disciplines was almost precisely the same as getting from a college baseball team to a MLB roster. Nothing has gotten easier since then.
