I had to turn in my odometer reading to my insurance company yesterday. The verdict: about 2,100 miles on the Versa in 12 months. That is not a typo.

The whole point of my feed is to document getting around while using a car as little as possible. I do drive, the car gets regular use, but if there’s any reasonable (sometimes less than reasonable) way to _not_ drive, I will employ that. 1/

CCAC North campus has a big parking lot in front of the building and a second, bigger lot a couple hundred yards south, connected by a sidewalk. Both lots are scraped clear of the foot of snow we got but the sidewalk has not been touched. Why bother plowing the south lot, then?

Today’s fun is getting my body and the car started with the outside thermometer saying -2°F. Things worked, though, so I had no trouble getting to the park & ride. Actually considered hiking to McKnight Rd but decided to drive to the p&r to avoid freezing the laptop. 1/

My weekly trip to Squirrel Hill underway. Drove to the park & ride with a low-tire-pressure warning light on. Barely missed one bus so took a few minutes to pump up all four tires. I figure bc it’s so frigid out, all four were a little low. Whether one or four, the light went off. Yay! 1/

I am truly curious what caused 1/3 of Pittsburgh's snowplows to break down during the big snow on Sunday. Blame all around, plus it's well known the fleet is old. Drivetrains? Plow machinery? Just got stuck? Combination? What of this could have been prevented by having newer equipment? 1/2

A personal trip to Squirrel Hill on today’s agenda. I had to carry quite a bit of stuff so did not consider walking to catch the 12. OK, scooter to West View or the park & ride, then. Opted for the latter, loaded up & uneventful trip. Problem was, I’d just missed an 8. 24 mins to the next! 1/

For my weekly fridge trip, I did another multi-modal itinerary. First carpooled with my son to West View, stopping at a grocery on the way, and he had to make a stop in the same plaza. Then to West View where he dropped me off. 1/

Drove to Monroeville. More specifically, drove wife to a medical appointment in Mrv. No reasonable alternative. Even 25 years ago when we had 2x today’s levels of transit service, it might’ve been possible but darn difficult. 1/

Combining both my food runs into a single trip. Didn’t make my fridge trip yesterday but am headed there now, straight from my 412 Food Rescue trip. Hide & ride at NHV, then 8:28 O12 ib 6205, hoping to catch a {6|7|4|2|12|8} back across the river. In that order of preference. 1/

The temptation is great, after a 6” snowfall, when passing in or out of a store and see that their snow shovel is within reach, to borrow it and clear off their walk a little better than the staff did.

This will be another complex, multi-modal travel day. Likely two cars, feet, bicycle, and some number of buses. At least a four-stop set of errands to attend to during daylight, then a two-location meeting after dark. 1/

I am not against the use of cars. I am against total reliance on cars for every transportation need. Figure out how to get what you need done, done, or get where you're going, without using a car, anyone's car. Online? Phone? Walk? Bike? Bus? Some combination? Figure it out, make it work.

#Coffeenering2025 trip #7: Between the rivers, Yinz Coffee in Bloomfield Pittsburgh. On my way to Critical Mass. Biked here from downtown, about 3mi, then CM will likely be another 5-10, then 3 more back downtown, then finally 1.5-ish from bus to home. I think that’ll count for two miles!
