loading . . . xfts's review of Persona 5 Royal | Backloggd Persona 5 is an absolutely wonderful game. Being my first Persona-series game, I didn't really know all that much what to expect. I have, at the time of writing this, only played a handful of JRPGs, and this one absolutely takes the cake for the best one I've played.
The Good:
Persona 5 excels at being a game full of life and emotion. The art style pops, the characters are masterfully voiced over, and the story never stops being interesting. I also really enjoyed the social aspect of things, where you can interact, or 'hang out' with other main characters to deepen your bond with them. The combat is also full of fun (for the most part), where mastering weaknesses is crucial, and using your skills wisely is even more so.
The Mediocre:
Persona 5 can feel rather tedious at times. You play the game on a set calendar, where almost every day is played through. The issue with this, is the fact that there are times where you are doing the same thing every day. Talking to the same person, making coffee, going to the laundromat to see if you got good armor from a palace, going to school, etc, etc. It just feels like a chore sometimes, but luckily this is far overshadowed by everything good in the game.
I also feel like a few of the bosses, or 'palace rulers' if you will, took way too much luck. Dreading the fact that some of them can use a one-hit-kill attack is just terrifying, and starting the battle over due to an unfair attack is just, I dunno, tedious? Yeah, this game has some tedious elements.
The Bad:
I couldn't think of a single thing that I thought was just plain 'bad', but your mileage may vary. Or, maybe you'll think this game is just as great as I did?
Despite it's minor shortcomings, I still really, really enjoyed it, and I would absolutely recommend it for an existing fan of JRPGs. Maybe not someone who wants to try their first JRPG, but it's still very high on my recommendation list.
5/5 with a grain of salt https://backloggd.com/u/xfts/review/3572543/
