To celebrate reaching 4000 followers on #Bluesky here's our 4000th archive record - showing RAF 114 Signals Unit at Luneberg, Germany in 1948. 114 SU were positioned to assist with the Berlin Airlift and the RAF radar units supporting air traffic control.

A superb session yesterday with The Centre of Aviation Photography in the Cold War operations room, some really creative and talented photographers took on the challenge of shooting in this unique space, and our volunteers got the chance to be models for the day!

This #internationalwomensday we recognise the vital roles carried out by women in the RAF. At it's peak in 1943 some 182,000 women were serving in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force, along with 74,000 'Wrens' of the Women's Royal Naval Service and 250,000+ in the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS). Collective Cold War assistance required! While we're carrying out some maintenance in the ops room we noticed the acronym S.P.O.A. on one of the panels, but what it stands for seems to be a mystery - even to those who served in the room - and it's doubtful it's Single Point Of Access. Any ideas?

Thirty-five years ago today, “The Hunt for Red October,” adapted from insurance salesman Tom Clancy’s bestselling 1984 first novel, opened in theaters across the United States. “This business will get out of control. It will get out of control and we’ll be lucky to live through it.”

#Onthisday 90 years ago scientists Robert Watson-Watt and Arnold 'Skip' Wilkins carried out the Daventry Experiment to prove radio waves could detect an aircraft. The success of the experiment led to the development of the first true air defence system, ready in time for the Battle of Britain.

23 February 1914 | Bernard Świerczyna was born, a Polish soldier, #Auschwitz prisoner no. 1393, one of the leaders of the resistance in the camp. 3 days before he was hanged (30 December 1944) he wrote those words inside cell 28 in the basement of Block 11 at Auschwitz I.
