TL;DR bans are a slippery slope and eventually hurt everyone because the restriction(s) just keep getting tighter and tighter. Eventually, the criteria will come for what you make, no matter how clean or wholesome or morally right you think it is.

Re: LRTs; I’m a rape and sexual assault survivor. I find most fictional depictions, from outright non-con, to CNC, to extreme dub-con, even some iterations of consensual but not safe or sane, to be distressing if not outright triggering. But that’s what self moderation is for in creative space.

You might see several artists mad about the bluesky policy update banning non-con, even artists who do not make that kind of material, and wonder why it's such a problem. If that's you, here is a quick breakdown: 🧵

Restricting the expression of sexuality through fiction and art made by adults, for adults – including those you find personally disturbing or offputting – is conservative censorship, full stop. When that censorship disproportionately affects subgroups, that's also discrimination. For shame.

The solution right now is not saying “move to Mastodon, to Pillowfort, use Picarto galleries” etc, bc that won't stop this silent escalation of censorship and sexual repression on the internet. The issue is not which platform we choose, but rather raising our voices against what is happening.
