It’s hard to know what to say about this separation debacle anymore, except that it’s doing untold damage to economic investment and severely damaging Alberta’s relationship with First Nations. And i hate it so much.

What

neglects to tell us is that $200M in higher provincial property taxes will build new schools on the edges of a sprawling Calgary. Yet only 69% of kids attending schools in CBE’s Central district actually live there. Sprawl costs us.

Blanket rezoning hearing has begun in Calgary and those opposed have revealed their cards on day 1. It’s not about housing people. It’s about housing cars, aka Parking. PS. Row housing doesn’t have green space between units. That’s what makes it row housing.🤷♂️

This thread is partially inspired by Calgary, where right now rich, shady forces, and certain council members, want to undo “blanket rezoning” (they want it to sound sinister, but it was just a new zoning bylaw for the city that, among other things, enabled more infill housing). Don’t fall for it.

I spoke at council yesterday in support of retaining blanket rezoning. There has been a lot of talk about nodes and corridors as a solution to our housing shortage, a "grand bargain" that insulates neighbourhoods from change.
