Labor Rights and Civil Rights Are Immigration Rights! On May Day, we joined Mayor Brandon Johnson to stand in solidarity with workers - fighting for dignity, equity, and justice for all.

An Irish immigrant who turned personal tragedy into unstoppable activism, Mother Jones fought for workers’ rights, union power, and an end to child labor. Her fighting spirit is a reminder that no one fights alone when stand together.

IMRR visited the Indo-American Center this week and learned about the social services, public benefits, ESL and adult education, immigration support, and advocacy they provide to Chicago’s South Asian community and beyond. It is organizations like IAC that keeps communities safe and resilient.

Since 1964, language access has been a key civil right, protecting against discrimination based on national origin and language. This month, we reaffirm our commitment to language access as a fundamental right—ensuring every Chicagoan has equal access to services, resources, and opportunities.

Grace Chan McKibben, Executive Director of CBCAC, helped create Chicago’s first Asian American majority ward. Inspired by a mentor, she left student affairs for public service. She honors her great-grandmother’s resilience and sees WHM as a time to uplift and reflect.

Deputy Mayor Ponce de León presented on the new arrivals mission, which welcomed over 52,000 new arrivals, and the One System Initiative, boosting shelter capacity by 126%. Thank you to Concordia Place and the Avondale community for supporting 150+ families with services.

Dr. Ana Gil-García’s commitment to service stems from her life journey and her mother’s legacy of empowerment through education. As founder and Chair of the Illinois Venezuelan Alliance, she champions volunteers supporting immigrant communities.
