Last year we wrote a piece that had a real Latin feel to the rhythm. It was crying out for a cuica. We’ve played it a few times live and I keep getting asked what the squeaky drum is. It’s a Brazilian friction drum with a large pitch range, produced by changing tension on the head of the drum.

I bought a new microphone. That’s when I realised that microphones have been like cigarette lighters throughout my life. Never purchased, more ‘happened upon’. The last one I bought was my first one back in 1977 from Mazel Radio at the foot of the UMIST maths tower. A Shure Unidyne B. Shure again…
