I’m hearing a lot of people repeating the line that social democrats are not losing votes to the far right, so that invalidates the thesis that social democrats have lost touch with the working class and should address issues like migration. But this is missing the point

Weird take. This is not the first time the Austrian far right is in coalition talks to form a government. They also governed federally with ÖVP twice before, albeit as junior partners. Meanwhile, FPÖ currently also governs in several regional state coalitions. That 'firewall' collapsed decades ago.
