Thoughts about running? Will propulsion phase be above the critical occlusion tension in locomotor muscles? During sprints? Middle-distance? Marathon?? I'd expect it probably is in gastroc at least, based on how mNIRS deoxygenates during incremental running in many athletes 🤔

I have managed to do this with an asymmetric cost function. This is the OmPD model but it works similar for other models. The challenge is how "asymmetric" the cost function should be so it allows for "gaps" (i.e. sharp declines) in the mean-max data but still stays close to the data.

Our new preprint proposes a new way to quantify training loads based on power output. We describe how a 3-parameter CP model may be used to estimate contributions of each energy system, resulting in a "strain score" which overcomes some limitations of other TL metrics. doi.org/10.48550/arX...

In our recent meta-analysis with trained athletes, did the athletes who improved their VO2max more also improve their endurance performance more?🤔 No! 😮 In this dataset, +1% improvement in VO2max was associated with a negligible +0.04% change in TT performance. But why? 1/15🧵

Now that I think about it, I really like alternating CP & MLSS tests. The former is maximal in severe domain. The latter is (near-)maximal in heavy domain. Knowing one at least directionally tells us where the other is. Use the test more relevant to that training block

The joy of working with athletes and the importance of consistent work When working with developing athletes, it's all about doing decent work and not doing more than needed. Even a 6-week forced break following an injury shouldn't matter in the long run. Currently MMSS ~ 5W/kg with room to grow 📈

I don't like the idea of focusing too much on citations. Do high quality and relevant research and make a contribution to our understanding of the world. Citations might be a secondary effect, but are not the goal

We heard from our colleague Normand today about his work with elite female athletes returning to training after pregnancy. Sprint interval training on Zwift 3/wk starting 5wks postpartum returns abs VO2peak & Wpeak within 6wks. More research coming on post-pregnancy return to sport! #SportScience

Wow look at the variation in blood lactate responses during 60min TT @ computed FTP (20min *0.95) in 19 competitive (12M 7F) cyclists n=17 successfully completed 60min BLa responses consistent with heavy domain <MLSS. Group mean around 4.0 mmol/L, but individually anywhere from ~2-7 mmol/L! 🔗👇

Thanks for posting. This is bonkers 🤯. Above my pay grade. How do exogenous mito get where they need to go and integrate into local function? Must follow some biochemical gradient and fuse into existing matrix? Must be some half-life until the exo mito are 'phaged-out' back to equilibrium?

In research, we use standardised protocols for reproducibility In field applications, there's a strong argument for designing a fresh protocol for each athlete who walks through our door. Prioritise getting the information the athlete can actually use Thoughts? Disagree? Why?

In our recent network meta-analysis we found: 🔴higher level competitive athletes improved VO2max modestly more with 🟣polarised training, and 🔷lower level recreational athletes increased more with 🔵pyramidal training This is what those differences looks like 👇 But is this meaningful? 🤔🧵1/12

Really nice trial! VO2max improved by ~+10% in 8wks, the same for both 2 🆚 4 training sessions/wk in n=30 F & M untrained participants Performance outcomes also improved similarly in both groups: Wpeak +30 W (+0.45 W/kg!) on average. TTF @ 85% Wpeak shown here #SportScience #PhysicalActivity
