Why the US sees more tornadoes than any other country
Your area may have already seen a tornado or two this year. That’s more than people in other countries may ever experience.

We're expecting rotating supercells to form in/near the risk areas around 4 p.m. Central time Saturday afternoon. They'll quickly become severe, with large, destructive hail and likely a few tornadoes.

– Divergence, or the spreading of air aloft. The more "exhaust" air we fan away at the upper levels, the more war, humid air can be ingested from below. That means more fuel added to the fire.

– Moist air. Any dry air entrained into the circulation can erode it from within, spelling its demise. That hasn't been an issue with Sinlaku.

– Weak wind shear. Shear, or disruptive changing winds with height, can knock a hurricane off-kilter. To get a high-end hurricane, there can't be any shear. The environment, ironically, must be antecedently calm.

- Extremely warm waters. Water temperatures are between 86 and 90 degrees. That represents absurd amounts of "ocean heat content," or high-octane fuel, to sustain a hurricane.

Tragically, that perfection can be deadly if such high-end storms impact land. To get a hurricane like Sinlaku to occur, you need four ingredients to exist in perfect harmony:

Sinlaku is absolutely perfect — in the worst possible way. Achieving a storm of this magnitude using only air, water and heat requires absolute meteorological perfection.

The marauding monstrosity is northwest of the Federated States of Micronesia. Based on satellite imagery, it's easily Category 5 strength. It's tall, cold and sinister. (In fact, cloud tops are colder than Melissa's were. The Pacific produces incredibly tall, deep convection.)

Weather models also struggle to handle these sorts of events. We won't be able to sniff out "mesoscale" details (tiny smaller-scale forcing mechanisms) until the night before. Stay tuned!

90% of the area won't see much. 10% of the area could see significant impacts. These "conditional" all-or-nothing risks are difficult to communicate. Legitimately, it will be mostly sunny with a slight chance of tornadoes.

A cap, or lid of hot, dry air a mile above the ground, will work to suppress thunderstorm development by preventing surface air to rise. In MOST spots, this will win out. However, it's possible (especially Sunday/Monday) that smaller-scale features help to kick up isolated supercells.

But across the central/southern Plains, we have an impressive "parameter space" but not much "forcing." In other words, we have the storm fuel (instability) AND we have the spin (shear). But will storms form?

Confidence is greatest in some storms Monday/Tuesday across the Corn Belt and Upper Midwest. These will accompany a lifting warm front. A couple tornadoes are possible, along with hail and maybe a few wind gusts.
