I will offer some advice exclusively to fantasy cartographers: If you make a map of a known IP and you sell it, you ruin your chances to work with them unless they were the ones to hire you to create it. If this is what you want to do for a living, don't jeopardize that. Fan art is fine but free.

I cannot stress the importance of a website. Even the most basic link sharing page with a slideshow and a way to contact you for work. AND LINK TO IT IN YOUR BIO! As someone who is always looking for people to work with or refer, if I can't easily find a link to your stuff, I move on.

From what I’ve learned listening to professionals over the years, always prioritize quality over quantity. A portfolio is judged by its weakest pieces, not the strongest ones, so every work you include should reflect your best effort and care, because consistency builds trust and credibility.

If you don't have client work to show make your own projects & treat it like client work. What do you want to be hired for? Want to do book covers but are bad at titles (typo) then just do the illustration, don't slap bad typo on it. A few great pieces are better than a lot of okay once. Be picky.

Building a professional site can mean a lot of things to different people. Separate your galleries to show focus. Variety, even if you are really good at, is less appealing to clients. They want to know you are consistent. (Also, a lot of people are less likely click outside of what you send)

It's been years since I read Wings of Fire but I remember them doing a particularly good job of providing maps (& descriptions of the different dragon species) that were incomplete or later proven to be biased or incorrect. You can make some interesting story out of this stuff.

I always find it interesting how many people realize their maps are in the past. It's ok if something isn't on your map. Why? Because maps only reflect the landscape at the time the information was recorded, not seconds before the players or reader got there. https://www.patreon.com/posts/78190532
