22 January 1887 Engineer Sir Joseph Whitworth died. Stating ‘you can only make as well as you can measure’, he advanced accuracy in measurement and machining, devising the ‘British Standard Whitworth’ for screw threads. He left huge wealth for Manchester projects such as the Whitworth Art Gallery.

Studio 1 to 5, Oxford Rd, Mcr, 1972. Opened 1930 as the Regal Twin with two cinema screens. More screens were added in the 60s, and the cinema renamed Studio 1 to 5 (cinema closed in 1986). 1990; the Northern Ballet School took the lease, & it was transformed into the Dancehouse Theatre.

The Salvation Army handing out cups of tea to some of Manchester's homeless, 1956. The location is the Higgins Brick Croft near Strangeways. After receiving their evening meal at a nearby soup kitchen, the men would sneak in and take shelter in the warm brick kilns for the night.

#OTD 2nd January in 1981, serial killer Peter Sutcliffe, the "Yorkshire Ripper", was arrested in Sheffield. He was later convicted of murdering thirteen women - two of the murders took place in Manchester; all the others took place in West Yorkshire.

From 22nd Dec 1940, for two nights, Manchester was struck by intense bombing raids by German warplanes. Acres of warehouses, shops and offices in the city centre destroyed. 14 people killed at the Manley Arms pub in Hulme; in total, an estimated 684 people died in the raids.
