When you have the absolute need to be creative all the time, you simply can't relate to people who are bored, need something to do, want to join a club. It breaks my heart that I have to choose between creation and enjoyment of creation (reading, movies, music). Being a bored person? Can't do it!

I worked for Billy Graham’s Burbank film company from 1979-85. The Neil Diamond “Brother Love” song was about Billy’s Canvas Cathedral Crusade in LA in 1949. Having seen the footage, I can assure you Neil got it exactly right!

Our hot water heater has been down for about 4 days (of course, right at New Years!). Amazing what you'll do to get clean. I feel like Lil' Abner with my cold water shower and a bucket of hot water I boiled on the stove!

For various boring reasons, I can't overdub with headphones right now, so I went old school: one playback speaker and the mic aiming in opposite directions away from each other, low playback volume, etc. I thought my playing was a disaster but my sync was surprisingly good!

Saw Robin Williams on an old Law and Order. It was like One Hour Photo from Hell, if you can imagine such a thing! Made good use of his ability to change voices and go from placid to manic to insane. If he was struggling even then, you couldn't tell. Also guested Mo Rocca and Joe Scarborough.

When you're overdubbing or editing, do you ever just get lost in the beauty of the single chords? I do! And yes, I know this sounds like a stoner revelation but I've only had a little red wine.

I loved my orange Persian Andy, but he was an ornery cat. I knew he'd get angry at me and try to piss into my $1500 Teac 4-track, and goddamn if he didn't try. But I always kept it covered in plastic, and I could see the yellow stain. Ha! (You can see Andy AND the 4-track in this shot from 1995.)

Don't you love it when you're adding keys to a track (this is for you crappy players out there, like me) and you keep getting it wrong and punching in... but by the end of the track you know it perfectly, but you're DONE?

Three of my keys: a Kawaii synth and two Casios. The one in front was nice, but redundant (it’s on Ghost and Mr. Chicken). Recently sold. The middle one goes back a ways but is great-sounding and versatile. The Kawaii was my 1st decent digital synth. A pain to hook up so I defer to Casio & Alesis

Little by little my audient headphone option has been dying. Now it's totally gone. I recorded some drums, tambo and bongos today with the speakers playing low. THEN my friend Don said: "Why don't you plug into the Mac headphone jack?" DUH!!! That saves me having to spend $150 which we don't have!
