Richard Fidler's The Book of Roads and Kingdoms. I'm a bit late to this one but have been thoroughly enjoying it. It explores the Islamic Empire and the dynasties that ruled it at the time of the Islamic Golden Age. It's well worth listening to Richard read it on audio.
