Yeah even as a Sega and Amiga kid I’ve gotta admit the NES is pretty awesome. At the time it was a hard sell for me because it was clearly old tech even when it gained traction in the US, and a lot of the games are based around repeated plays, which made it frustrating when playing as a guest.

I’m used to this level from playing it a thousand times, but in retrospect it’s a fairly mean stage to start the player on. You have to play it pretty far forward.

Also I didn’t get into the first Castlevania until this year. I’d been meaning to for a while. The game design is very impressive.

Konami’s NES games are so good that they could’ve made a console that only plays those and it would’ve been one of the better consoles that gen.

Sega Genesis racing and some price tags from a bygone era

It’s interesting that Atari left off Pole Position (“Posit’n”)… the Atari 8-bit version of that is really decent, and the 7800 Pole Position II was the pack-in for that system.

Al Unser Jr. plays pretty well! It’s very smooth, and the cornering feels great. You don’t accelerate if you are skidding (unlike in an OutRun-like), so you have to figure out a good maximum entrance speed.

Super Monaco GP arrrrgh what do you want from me?!

The Genesis version of Outrun is underrated. There might not be a great reason to play it (especially as now you get Step On Beat in the M2 remasters!), but it was the closest thing at the time. It still plays quite well.

Congratulations to all the Democratic candidates who won tonight. It’s a reminder that when we come together around strong, forward-looking leaders who care about the issues that matter, we can win. We’ve still got plenty of work to do, but the future looks a little bit brighter.

Also I fully don’t get Super Monaco GP on Genesis. Monaco GP 1979, Super Monaco GP arcade, Amiga Super Monaco GP, all good. Genesis? It’s like “here’s a small chicane let’s just instantly throw your car into a roadside obstacle”

There are all these 8-bit racers that run fluidly, but as soon as 16-bitters hit they tried to add more complex geometry and the framerate goes down to like 10.

I wonder why arcade racers went to time extended via checkpoints rather than number of cars passed, like in 1970s arcade racers. I think the last game which did this might be Turbo?

Holy shit I’m so tired

Lotus Turbo Challenge II is such a good arcade racer. Lots of variety, tight time limits, solid difficulty curve, you could do 4 players with a serial cable (I still need to try this) and it did the Fast and Furious trick before F&F did it:

It’s funny how much of the NES look is the dot crawl. The whole system is kind of weird and flickery in a unique way.

If you look at a Sega Genesis or Super Nintendo’s design, they weren’t gunning to have the most cutting edge gaming possible- they were balanced for price, they didn’t have a need for cooling, and they were compact. The only big system that really fits this criteria anymore is the Switch.
