Do I really have to tell people why asking an Ai to make up information about half of someone’s face won’t work to correctly identify someone? People see “computer, enhance image!” in TV shows and get ideas, I swear

I think any of them is 90s betweener systems could’ve stuck around for a bit had the companies played their cards right. Imagine X-Wing, Mechwarrior 2, Interstate ‘76 and other computer hits coming to Jag, 32x… PCs were still insanely expensive and PSX&Saturn’s initial pricetag wasn’t cheap either.

I’m not the only one having trouble coping with this week, right?

The Chaos Engine is more sophisticated than it gets credit for. The levels themselves do a lot of interesting things with switches, some levels have secret exits, and the atmosphere is great. Steampunk before it was big, with pounding techno that changes dynamically.

I really like threshold aiming. It’s more immersive, feels very natural, allows you to aim off-center so you can snap off shots without changing facing too much… this, Conduit, Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, Red Steel 2, all have a really cool feel imo

RIP Loren Carpenter (1947-2025), who I just learned passed away on December 21 at the age of 78. He worked for the Lucasfilm Computer Graphics Division (where he helped create the Genesis effect for Star Trek 2, and Rescue on Fractalus!). He co-created RenderMan and was chief scientist of Pixar. 🤯

For today’s #RandomGameSaturday, Balance of Power: A Cold War strategy game where you try to not have a nuclear war. It’s very detailed and has been forgotten a bit these days, but was a big deal on computers in the 80s.

Four games that defined my 2025. Prime 4 because I waited for it all year and I’ve played it a good chunk these last few weeks.

“I made this whole indie game myself without ai” you say as you use someone else’s engine that is like 9000000x more manhours than you put in on your project. Game engines are a skill and an art, too, you know. And there’s a beauty to them.

Today for #RandomGameSaturday it’s PN03 for GameCube, one of the Capcom Five releases along with RE4 and Viewtiful Joe. It’s an awesome, unorthodox score attack game which is slightly let down by a padded length. I also love how nonchalant the main character is. One of my favorite Cube games.

Raycast voxel landscape engines tend to be one height map and one texture map (tiled or otherwise). But is there one that instead of a texture map that has a texture # map? For example, you could have a 16 color one where each color refers to a different texture.

Great example of pseudo 3d technique in the 70s. I am guessing this is an analog effect.
