The heaviest object in the Museum is our Columbian Printing Press, weighing in at 1500kg! Still used regularily, the printing press once belonged to Warrens Printers, who published the Royston Crow Newspaper. This beautiful print by Gavin was made on the press that inspired it. #Museum30, #Heavy

It's hard to believe now, but there used to be a large pond in Priory Gardens near the parish church. In 1937, it was filled in with rubble from nearby roadworks. With another war imminent, there were concerns bombers might see the #Reflection of the moonlight on the water. #Museum30

This week, Emma has started a Makaton course thanks to the support of BEEE Creative and the HLF project we're part of. Sophie and Rhian will also be doing Easy Read training later this month. As well as supporting the project, these courses will also help us to make the Museum more accessible.

Meet #Rainbow Ted! Rainbow Ted was the Burns Road Rainbow Toddlers Playgroup mascot from 1992, and fondly remember by many, including Rhian. For the group's 10th anniversary, Ted was auctioned to raise money for the group. Cllr Beaver, who purchased it, then donated it to the Museum. #Museum30

Today, on #RemembranceSunday, we pause to honour those who gave everything. Amoung them is Private Darlow, who died on 18 Nov 1914 aged just 18. Frederick was from Royston, where he worked for a local surgeon before moving to London to become a baker. When war broke out, he enlisted immediately.

Captivated by the hunting locally, King James I established a royal retreat in our town, remnants of which can be seen today. These satellite images are overlaid with the historic buildings and street names from the era of King James, based on archival documents. Day 9, #Museum30 #Map

Day 8 of #Museum 30 is #Stitch, so how could we not share the Royston Tapestry? Started on July 1 1993, people from the local area and beyond gave their time and skills to help create this unqiue embroidery. Measuring more than 25m long, it took 25yrs to complete. Find out more: buff.ly/IaZBdlu

We mentioned our pub signs for Day 2 of #Museum30, but that's not all we have from Phillips Brewery; we also have bottles, ledgers and this #Box. Using wooden slats, the inside is separated into 12 spaces for holding beer bottles. It's also reinforced with metal wire woven into the crate walls.

We had a great time with Crafted Connections for their first workshop at the Museum this afternoon. And what's even better is there's 3 more to enjoy this month 😄

Day 6's prompt for #Museum30 is #Clay. Last year, we had a great evening with 10th Royston Beavers. We created a trail around the Museum showcasing their favourite objects and why they chose them. One of the objects was this Roman pot because "It is beautiful and old."

We had so much fun with our Museum Tots this morning! It was lovely to welcome familiar faces, new friends and some tiny siblings. We sang songs, played with gingerbread playdough, made firework paintings and enjoyed lots of sensory activities. 🥰

In October 1605, King James VI&I was in Royston when he was notified of a letter received by Lord Monteagle, a minister who owned a house in Royston, on the corner of what is now London Road and Sun Hill. The letter provided information about a conspiracy to assassinate the King.

Hello! 👋 Day 1 of #Museum30 is #Introduction… So, if you don't already know us, we're Royston Museum, a small local history museum in North Hertfordshire that celebrates and shares the history of our town and the local area. Expect interesting facts, occasional silliness, typos and biscuits.

👻 Happy Halloween! 👻 During the 1924 Royston Hospital Carnival, Dan Young, who owned the Kneesworth Street cycle shop, dressed as a skeleton. Tricycles like this were developed so a lady could mount from the front, therefore making them more "suitable". Queen Victoria purchased 2 tricycles in 1881.

🐾October 27 is Black Cat Day. It was was created by Cats Protection in 2011 to celebrate the majesty of monochrome moggies. 🐾 This flag was sold by Pauline Stockbridge in Royston to raise money for charity during WW1. Pauline raised money for charities including the RCSPA and the Blue Cross.
