I will say it - I miss the nimbleness, the imagination, the ingenuity of a small church. Large churches have so much invested in preserving what has been or what is. Less room for vision and creativity. Especially if the budget is tight.

Just heard from my adult child in Houston that he's working all weekend (florist). Absentmindedly asked him why -- and turns out it's a lot of funerals for kids from Hill Country flooding. Keep all those serving and ministering to devastated families extra in your prayers. This is all so hard.

Trump is touting the no tax on tips provision in his budget bill. But many tipped workers won't benefit because their earnings are so low. And the provision expires in 2028. The estate tax cuts that primarily benefit the rich? Those were made permanent. Funny how that works.

Returning from a 10 day vacation today. For the first time in parish ministry I deleted email access from phone and turned off the work cell phone. (Checked in 3 times.). Best thing ever - and never going back.

A friend asked me to go to his small, progressive Lutheran Church here in South Brooklyn/Flatbush today. (I'm empatheist—an atheist who welcomes your faith.) A thing that stuck out is that the Church has tools for addressing and contextualizing this moment that few other institutions have.
