JOSEPHINE is one of the most difficult movies I've ever watched. One repeated directorial flourish is brilliant. The script's psychological insight is truthful & tough. Tatum is sturdy, Mason Reeves is a great discovery. And I kinda don't ever wanna think about any of it again.

Really adored THEYDREAM, which uses a cornucopia of different mixed media and animation styles to bring the director's childhood and family memories to vibrant life. Gorgeous to look at, emotionally effective, and some really charming miniatures and models!

JARIPEO is a totally original, boldly constructed documentary about the queer folk who inhabit the masculine rodeo scene in Michoacán, Mexico. Focuses on their anecdotal experiences, using filmmaking flourishes to visualize their thoughts and testimonies in imaginative ways.

FILIPIÑANA digs into the unnatural evil that is the existence of golf courses, investigating their class disparities and environmental destruction with style. Really well shot and effectively paced, with a quiet dread hiding underneath its cheery, colorful exterior.

TELL ME EVERYTHING explores a thorny perspective from the AIDS epidemic in the 80s - those that overreacted and took all the wrong actions. It's beautifully shot, but ultimately feels half-baked and unsatisfying.

Kinda shocked to be saying this given what happens in the movie, but knowing what Sam Raimi is capable of, SEND HELP feels strangely restrained. But wow I had fun. Rachel McAdams, you certified freak you. Dylan O'Brien good at weird mouth sounds. Love being in a vocally squeamish audience.

In both the story it tells and its very existence, the illegally-made Iranian film THE FRIEND'S HOUSE IS HERE represents an act of beautifully constructed and inspiring defiance. A moving ode to the necessity, ability, and liberating power of community. Look at what art can do!

I'm always down for a spontaneous dance sequence and I love magical realism...but I couldn't get myself fully attached to HA-CHAN, SHAKE YOUR BOOTY! Rinko Kikuchi is great as a grieving woman who keeps making (somewhat) understandably frustrating choices.

As with most road trip movies, I found HOT WATER pretty naturally compelling. A lovely little mother-son story, with a marvelous performance by Lubna Azabal as a delightfully imperfect mom dealing with a troubled son & a recently-kicked nicotine habit. Funny, well-paced, sweet.

I hoped ZI would be the movie that made me finally get Kogonada, but alas. Aimless wandering and conversations, with some deeply earnest moments that just come across as unearned and treacly. Gorgeously shot, as always. Haley Lu Richardson is great, as always. Kogonada confounds me, as always.

I adored THE ONLY LIVING PICKPOCKET IN NEW YORK. John Turturro as an old-fashioned thief following a classic code of honor in everything he does. Contemporary, but with real 70s crime neo-noir vibes. Directed with class, written with wit. A Sundance highlight.

WHEN A WITNESS RECANTS is infuriating & powerful, using a mix of documentarian techniques (archival, illustration, interviews) to tell its upsetting wrongful conviction story. Some limited filmmaking choices (lots of on-screen text in the court scenes) but undeniably powerful.

SEE YOU WHEN I SEE YOU is the most Sundancey of the movies I’ve seen at Sundance so far. A tender, funny, and emotional family story that takes on a smart therapeutic angle. Definitely moving but didn’t stick with me too long.

This is a terrific piece of rhetorical construction that also happens to be a very good point. A lot of us have been heartened by the courage and integrity so many Minnesotans have shown over this past week, in the face of intimidation and spiteful violence.

GIVE ME THE BALL! is a rousing, exciting, and very straightforward look at Billie Jean King's historic career. It's approach is ultra-standard, but it's impossible not to be totally thrilled by everything about the Battle of the Sexes. Amazing footage and commentary from King herself.

Given how much I've loved some of David Wain's other comedies, I thought I was the ideal audience for GAIL DAUGHTRY AND THE CELEBRITY SEX PASS. But the jokes simply aren't funny enough in this unexpected Wizard of Oz reimagining (Zoey Deutch innocent. John Slattery ascends.)

Weirdly, every time I go to Sundance I see a movie like MUM, I’M ALIEN PREGNANT - a gross out, low budget but high concept sci-fi with old fashioned effects & a gives-no-fucks approach. Works best as an unexpected pro-choice metaphor, but just too intentionally obnoxious for me.

Alex Gibney's KNIFE: THE ATTEMPTED MURDER OF SALMAN RUSHDIE smartly lets the author tell his own story via narration. It may feel like he's just reading from his book of the same name, but by expressing his own thoughts, asides & tangents, he draws us in with casual familiarity.

John Wilson's comedy-documentary THE HISTORY OF CONCRETE is basically just a feature-length episode of his show How To, which you won't hear me complaining about too much. Goes on a little too long but it's definitely the most and hardest I've laughed at Sundance.

UNDERTONE got me good. Crazy scary with incredible sound design. A really impressive directorial showcase, staying effectively locked-in on its singular location and (very) minimal ensemble. The finale is a terrifying roller coaster. Podcasters, beware, this is coming for us.

The Charli xcx pseudo-doc THE MOMENT (aka Brat Swan) steers further & further into fiction as it goes. 100% made for those who bought bright green clothes in 2024 (take that for what you will). Charli is pretty fantastic as an exaggerated and, well, bratty version of herself.

I’m just glad that a movie like Gregg Araki’s I WANT YOUR SEX exists, even if its exploration of differing generational attitudes toward sex makes the film feel more didactic than his past work. Cooper Hoffman is an anxious delight, Olivia Wilde is just sensational. Fab costumes!

SACCHARINE is The Substance meets It Follows, but unfortunately not half as interesting as either. Effectively nasty filmmaking that strongly adheres to its own stomach-churning aesthetic rules, but it all leads to a final chapter that’s baffling in its messaging.

PARALYZED BY HOPE: THE MARIA BAMFORD STORY is a hilarious, unafraid-to-go-there portrait of the comedian, delving into her mental health struggles with total honesty. Lots of excellent stand-up footage. Like most Apatow movies, it’s a bit too long, but I was totally engaged.

With 28 YEARS LATER: THE BONE TEMPLE, Nia DaCosta brings an energy that’s patient & shockingly lovely when needed, but unafraid to get gnarly & brutal. Excellently deployed symbolism and a Tony-worthy Ralph Fiennes performance (trust me) make this possibly my favorite film in the whole series.

Never doubt James Cameron. AVATAR: FIRE & ASH is another sprawling, ambitious, gorgeous adventure. Oona Chaplin is the best new element - she's iconic, she's gaggy, etc, and her ash tribe rocks. Cameron expands the series' visual capacity with some innovative, trippy sequences.

MARTY SUPREME is messy and ridiculous, but gloriously so (just like our main character). Timmy zooms through the epic film's chaos with a focus and drive that's both hilarious and unsettling. Gwyneth is captivating. LOVED the period-inappropriate synth score. It's all so very Safdie.
