Little mouse worried if there would be enough food this winter, but then the faintest of smells drifted along with the falling leaves. Oh! Hawthorn berries dipped in honey, pine needle tea and the finest acorn and mincemeat pies. The Northland ones were coming! This winter they would all feast.

Fox huddled under his umbrella against the November rain. He caught a whiff of a familiar scent whispered in the wind. His Northlands brothers had set off, he could sense them on the move. “I must tell the bakers to start preparing “ he thought as he dashed home.

‘Hush your tears now little one and listen on the wind. Can you hear it? Listen hard, There is a glimmer of a song from the Northlands. Winter is coming and so are the Northland ones. I can hear it! Soon our basket will be full of berries and candles and songs shall be sung’

Double calming tablets all week, music, chews etc etc and Lupin is still panicking. I fucking hate fireworks and wish they’d just ban them. I don’t understand how anyone can enjoy something when they know it causes so much distress to others.

Mouse pulled their cloak a little tighter. They paused a moment and caught the faintest of glimmers of the scent Winter drifting down from the Northlands. It sent a little thrill of a shiver knowing that soon the ones from the Northlands will be here with lanterns berries and merriment.

Can we just give a big cheer for beech trees please? Whilst i think my fave tree is a birch, beech are just utter stalwart troopers. Those zingy green leaves heralding in the spring and most wonderful golden autumn colours to dazzle us on our walks. Hats off to you Beech!

How is this a gotcha? As a kid any relative older than you was aunt or uncle. Any adult we knew was an auntie or uncle. Even my next door neighbour was Auntie Pauline. My mum’s friends were auntie. My mum is actually my aunt. Ffs.

Nature notes: shrews are very fond of sketching their surroundings and can often be seen carrying a small cushion with them to sit on whilst drawing. (And yes I did make a teeny tiny sketch book and teeny tiny pencil with actual lead in it - come and see at GNCCF Manchester 16-19Oct )
