Depending on who you ask, the Ford government’s decision to place the Toronto District School Board under supervision — stripping its elected trustees of their authority — is either a much needed solution to a long-standing problem or an “anti-democratic” move that silences parent voices.

Sidelining elected trustees is an attack on democracy and distraction from chronic underfunding of school boards. Yesterday, I joined TDSB and TCDSB parents, union leaders, and elected trustees at a press conference to share this critical message rooted in care for children and communities.

Since coming into power, this Government has chronically underfunded our public education system, taking $6.36 billion out of classrooms. Now, Minister Calandra is appointing insiders with no background in education in place of elected school board trustees. ☛debbieking.ca/news
