I hate a withheld backstory–when the characters all know about/are motivated by a past event but it’s slowly revealed to the reader. It feels false and exasperating to me.

I worked at four papers. Three of them are shut down and the fourth is greatly reduced - about 20% of the journalists remain and they all work from home, newsroom is closed.

Today is our anniversary. I spent more than half my life with Matt, and we loved each other very much, and he took such good care of me and our daughters. I’ll love him and miss him forever and I still can’t believe he’s gone.
