After two days of teaching and faculty/student meetings, the third day is always dedicated to catching up on my email and responding to anxious messages. I believe this cycle will repeat each week this semester.

Every time I open this app, I realize that at this rate, we may all be doing different jobs in 5+ years. By choice or force, depending on which state you live in.

Journal rejections on a Saturday are always a reminder I need to work/write 24 hours, 7 days a week. 😞

My HigherEdu brain: SMU raised $100 million in seven days for football, and $159 for the year. My 2025 pessimistic brain: Columbia caved because they didn't have money or access to millions.

I’ll bet all $5 in my pocket this leads to hiring quotas for white men. Imagine a search committee has 4 finalists: 2 white men, a woman, & a minority. If a white man isn’t chosen, and yearly data shows they’re not a significant majority of hires/promotions watch how fast that becomes “a problem.”

I do believe good work is being done at Columbia University. I hope all colleagues and associates at Columbia find ways to move forward. That being said, I would not recommend to family or close friends to apply/enroll due to fear the federal government could/will interfere in personal life.

In America, power thrives by dividing. Poor whites were convinced they were different from poor Black folks fueling Jim Crow, which hurt them too. It’s the same playbook: manipulate the marginalized to justify harm, all while claiming to protect them. Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

There is a wealth of documented empirical data/evidence of the harm caused to Black Americans in American Higher education over the decades. *The fines amount to $0 - nothing significant. Moreover, there will never be swift action in America to protect all marginalized groups at same levels.

I'm not a legal scholar, however it'll be interesting how institutions (if they had backbones) could use statements to say they are targeted based on assumptions of individual political beliefs. They are saying out loud conservatives will target a university that appears to have progressives.

Maybe one of the most frustrating lines. 😞 "The agreement — effective for three years — states that it is not an admission of guilt or liability by either party, but rather a settlement to avoid the burdens and risks of litigation." Extortion!

The child in this trustee’s scenario? Faculty. Who submitted their tenure files for consideration in accordance with the terms of their employment. Both sides have a responsibility in that contract, one to submit and one to review. I hope everyone really hears this.

Seems important to note that accreditors have discretion over these decisions, so they can ignore what the federal government says. Also important to note that the federal government is threatening to go after accreditors.

Tenure isn't guaranteed; individuals largely control their own destiny. While there are horror stories, most tenure-track faculty members are familiar with the process. UNC is signaling that tenure awards may now be linked to the university's financial situation on a year-to-year basis. #HigherEd

As children many of us read a few folktales including the "Big Bad Wolf" and we all understood how the wolf portrayed himself as a "good faith" character. As observers of these stories, even as children, we knew the wolf was up to no good. College presidents should read these stories. 🤷🏾‍♂️😞

"Few had to do with how he would run the University of Florida; ...... most questions focused on DEI." They didn't care about his administrative capabilities or his expertise. He didn't have a record of attacking marginalized groups or bonafide conservative chops. He ultimately played himself.

The President's proposed FY26 budget would end funding for TRIO. This is the first signal of programs getting cut this year, and the question now is how widespread it will become.
