I did history because I wanted to be a historian. The stats all say that was a mistake from someone from my background because they don't get hired. If I had my time again knowing what I wanted to do was blocked off - I'd have done something else. More understanding of students is needed in SHAPE

About 25 years ago I was in a Hampshire pub and got talking to a Romani man who had an education to PhD level, he had rejected the world he worked so hard to enter which had worked so hard to reject him. He had enough of it.

This was bad all round as well as I knew the result was bad going in as the interview panel also a had Gadjoplaining historian who had told me that for a GRT History job they didn't want anyone who did GRT History 🤣

This was my worst academic experience. Interview feedback from a whitesplaining middle class Oxford scholar was that as a autistic, working class, Romani scholar they didn't think I'd help them diversify the journal. They hire a whitesplaining, middle class Oxford scholar 🚩🚩🚩

The main thing about 1824 is that it moved from listing types of people (including Romani), to types of behaviour, and gave unprecendented authority to local policing officers. Its role in stop and search is indicative.

There is an effort throughout UK HE to reduce the amount of working class scholars in UK universities VCs don't like them as students Academics don't like them as colleagues The failure to address class discrimination in HE is the major failing of expansion www.theguardian.com/education/20...

Of course this made worse as the whole thing assumes the smashing together of British Romani people & Irish travellers - who have very different ethnic origins but are recorded together purely based on a cultural perception of itinerancy - which is ridiculous in a health setting.

On Romani stereotyping - its remarkable how the mixture of revulsion & romance is the same in the 18th century through to today. Its really sad how I keep being shown that research into Romani stereotyping isn't considered even slightly important.

A perfect reminder of why using 'GRT' is useless & harmful. It totally strips Romanies & Irish Travellers of their ethnic identity. I've been told 'Romanies aren't a race they're a culture' in peer review. I've not found 1 university or funder interested in research to address things like this

There are also even more of us ECRs that never get opportunties casual or otherwise. Your PhD, publications and experience just get 'feedback' that makes it clear your application wasn't read.
