This is a long shot because this isn't the old twitter, but I'm looking for history articles/books that look at cases of British/Irish settlers/squatters being prosecuted for crimes against Indigenous/colonized people. It can be anywhere in the world, but ideally the late C18/early C19.

The biggest group arguing for cold spots are historians. Historians hate hiring outside Oxbridge or international grads - immediately devaluing all other degrees. Until historians/other academics drop their classism & see worth beyond their own backgrounds - they are advocates for cold spots

Herts' decision to axe pretty much all its humanities UG courses feels a new low, even for UK HE. But the History issue cuts deep. I did my PhD in that dept, and one of its most impressive features was cultivation of a combined research culture across /all/ student levels.

I also can't speak more highly of Media History and the reviewers who really helped get a somewhat broad subject under the journals word limit & while keeping the thrust of it in tact

Controvertial opinion - its about as valid as any prize in academia. Only because I think giving prizes that essentially rank our research is silly and counter productive especially in such a subjective process as research. You end up with 1 winner & a lot of people questioning their research.

Of course this is just racism & totally inaccurate. If you need to remove Romanies or Irish Travellers & live in world where they don't exist - don't ask the police - ask someone who works in a history department they are experts😅

Labour are running an antisemitism ad on Greens - fair enough But Labour has clear problems with racism towards Romanies & Irish Travellers & are selective in their outrage. He's part of a leaflet their Antisemitism Tsar John Mann sent our when he was an MP

Of course this made worse as the whole thing assumes the smashing together of British Romani people & Irish travellers - who have very different ethnic origins but are recorded together purely based on a cultural perception of itinerancy - which is ridiculous in a health setting.

If anyone were thinking of attending but is unsure - Aberystwyth is beautiful & the university wonderful its worth a visit even for a day trip.

I agree. But academics have 100% encouraged this attitude by being Ivory Towers. Most academics obsess over Oxbridge & international staff & wonder why no one values any other part of a system they only value for pay.

A perfect reminder of why using 'GRT' is useless & harmful. It totally strips Romanies & Irish Travellers of their ethnic identity. I've been told 'Romanies aren't a race they're a culture' in peer review. I've not found 1 university or funder interested in research to address things like this

This is even worse for underrepresented groups. 1/3 of humanities staff & growing are international scholars. Oxbridge always get preference. History is not only getting smaller its actively entrenching its disadvantages towards British ethnic minorities & working class scholars

Call me Cassandra, but if you make thousands of HEI staff either compulsorily or 'voluntarily' redundant and create conditions in which senior staff take early retirement in an attempt to save more junior colleagues' careers without significant new hiring, a critical loss is exactly what happens.

For solidarity with my fellow ECRs I'll share my favourite interview feedback. For an 18th century job I was told 'You came second. The only difference between the two of you was that they knew exactly what admin task they wanted to do alongside teaching.' ....they hired a 17th centuryist 🤣

This is worrying. We would not only lose the great work being done but any further progress Currently Museums Wales do little/nothing to commemorate Welsh Romani history/culture or Welsh Kale Romanies - but they are at least open to talking about it I fear that won't be the case if Reform win

There are also even more of us ECRs that never get opportunties casual or otherwise. Your PhD, publications and experience just get 'feedback' that makes it clear your application wasn't read.
