My own view is that we crossed the Rubicon when we voted to strip rights from EU citizens who had lawfully made their homes here without even giving them the right to vote on it and this discussion tracks a direct line back to that. There’s a reason for that “first they came for” stuff.

WHY IS ANYONE SURPRISED ABOUT THIS. I would say that people who genuinely care about the free speech of those they disagree with is < 10% of those who express any view in the subject at all. For everyone else it is 100% about getting maximum airtime for the things they agree with.

Social norms are not self-enforcing. If people draw a bright red line and shun/shame those who cross it, that makes prejudice and intolerance unacceptable. If they don’t, it becomes acceptable. Sometimes it really is that simple.
