The three-legged crow Yatagarasu is the messenger of the gods of the Shinto shrines of Kumano. It's also the symbol of the Japan Football Association, perhaps because they feel that an extra leg would often be a handy thing to have? #FolkloreThursday

An old European superstition claimed that barnacle geese actually hatched as adults from barnacles rather than as chicks from eggs. This belief came from the fact that people never saw the barnacle geese's eggs and didn't know that they migrated north to nest. #FolkloreThursday

Tanuki are pranksters, hard partiers, and lovers of drink, and are often depicted with a sake flask in one hand. They may purchase it with leaves they've transformed to look like money, which then turn back to worthless foliage when they've left the shop. #folklorethursday

In English folklore, a barghest is a monstrous black dog with fiery eyes. It foretells the deaths of important people through barking and howling, and its paws cause wounds that don't heal. Sometimes a barghest will turn invisible and walk about with the sound of rattling chains. #FolkloreThursday

It all started with Pliny the Elder who mentioned in his work, Naturalis Historia, that hedgehogs gathered grapes from the vine, using the spines on its back. Much later Geoffrey of Monmouth then wrote that hedgehogs impaled apples the same way but sadly this is all untrue #FolkloreThursday
