Red Nails was the first Conan story I ever read and kind of set my entire understanding of Conan as a character. And yeah, that includes the shadowy, lurking bdsm vibes that sometimes whisper around him. I could do without the racial decay subtext but I do like the ominous sexuality. it’s fun 💀

On final thought I'm just going to make my fictional RPG world as cruel as I want it to be. It's barbaric and bloody, and it just doesn't feel right trying to clean up some parts of it. Does that limit it? I guess, but that limits it to the audience that actually wants it, and that seems worth it!

Unironically I kind of like complicated dice formulas (formulae?). I’m not a math genius or anything but I think 2d6+1d8+4 is more fun than like, 1d20+4 or whatever. In combat you probably want easier math but for like an Econ part of the game? I think it’s fun. Dice are fun.

I spent one year of middle school on full remote learning (covid) and it was absolutely the worst year of my life. I'm not sure if I was just unusually weak but it certainly wasn't a lack of effort; I was a good student and everything. It was just a bleak existence, staring at a screen all day. ☠️

After hours of gritting my teeth I think I need to re-evaluate my entire combat system. It was too downstream of D&D, and now that I've read...15(!!!) new systems in detail, I'm realizing my horizons were way too limited. I thought I was adding some fun twists, but...not twisty enough. 💀

In my game world, there are elves and orcs, but they're not playable; players are all human. But they do have *cultures,* which can give them the flavor and background that I think helps people built interesting characters. I tend to like that a lot more and honestly recommend it even for D&D.

A friend has invited me to play something called "Ten Candles!" I spent several seconds in confusion before realizing it's some kind of RPG involving actual, real candles. Anyone played it? I'm trying not to ruin the experience by looking it up but curious if there's anything I should know.

This is a really unimportant point in the grand scheme of even the most minor conversation, but I have to make it: the "death of the author" is a tool for analyzing the meaning of a particular work of literature; it has nothing at all to do with the morality of purchasing that art or not.

I think my crankiest RPG opinion is I don't like the like, meme culture around it? Like when people strip out all context from a story and post absurd, inside-joke versions of what they did. "We fast talked a failson prince into piledriving his fake mom into an capitalist's prize goblin parade!"

I've been reading a lot of contempt aimed at d20 games, usually from people with more extensive knowledge of this insane hobby than I can hope to have. I get what they mean. But I know something they forgot: the d20 itself is the coolest die. It makes a fun noise, it's pretty, 20 is a fun number.
