Another foundational tool we use to build SQLiteData is CKSyncEngine from CloudKit. In fact, we use two! One for the private database and one for the shared database. This gives us everything we need to batch+send changes to CloudKit, as well as observe changes from CloudKit.

One of the most important tools we use to build SQLiteData 1.0 is triggers. They allow us to observe all changes to your tables in order to synchronize to CloudKit. The triggers are very complex, but thanks to our type-safe and schema-safe query tools we are able to write these without fear!

Our new SQLite + CloudKit synchronization tools handle binary assets for you. Any data blobs held in SQLite are automatically turned into CKAssets and uploaded to CloudKit. It all works behind the scenes without you doing anything. 😁

Now that our SQLite + CloudKit public beta is out we can explain why we spent 4 weeks diving deep into SQL triggers. They are the primary tool we use to implement synchronization. They allow us to listen to everything happening in your database so that we can replay those changes to CloudKit.

The best part of our SQLite + CloudKit synchronization tools is that they work seamlessly behind the scenes without you having to think about it. But, we don't hide the CloudKit metadata from you. It is possible to query for your CKRecords and CKShares directly from SQL!

It may seem too good to be true, but with just these few lines of code you will be able to generate an iCloud link that can be shared with others for collaboration on a record (and its associations). So, sharing a reminders list also shares all of its associated reminders. 🤯

SwiftData offers a promise of simple persistence with easy synchronization. We feel it currently falls short of that goal, but in the fullness of time it may achieve it. But, for the present, we are working on tools that achieve SwiftData's promise, and honestly a lot more.
