Very chilly photo walk this morning, but I learned that my homemade pinhole bodycap lens mostly sucks, and I don't think that I captured any photos on my Pen D test roll (not convinced the film was advancing).

Pen update: the latch that holds back the shutter (fig A) isn't quite getting clearance, which happens right at the top of the stroke. I've decided that the "main spring" (fig B) doesn't quite have enough tension so added a bit of magnet wire, tightened to give that extra pull at the top.

How it’s going… Figured out what’s not happening, and how I can force it to happen. But not clear how to keep it happening normally. Oh and I broke a screw, twisted the head right off. It holds the thumb wheel down, so that’s loose without it but still functioning.

I am now the owner of my first half-frame camera, and first film camera in ~30 years. I wasn't willing to spend the money for a Pentax 17, and wanted more control than a Kodak H35. This Pen D needs some work (as expected) but overall seems in decent condition—lens has light scratches but is clear.

RAGBRAI last year sounded pretty terrible too; the Dust Bowl 100 was a hot, grueling ride but we all agreed we had it better (and could go home to our beds). Back to the gravel this year!

Completed the #Festive500 this year with a ride up Indianapolis's newest (finished) rail trail, the B&O. Looking forward to the Nickel Plate being finished next year! Between Indy's trail network, Cultural Trail, Zipp, and nearby gravel, it could be the cycling hub of the midwest… Charmera photos
