I really, really like #zed. I really hope to see it rise as a true, non-GAFAM-funded VSCode replacement for the dev community. It has everything it takes to do so. But #emacs is the organic extension of my brain and of my fingertips.

Non-determinism in software development isn't a good thing. It might be a leap off the page, but it's leaping into art rather than an industry leap ahead. This is why so many commentators are confused and think themselves increasingly irrelevant, whereas they should just be patting LLMs on the head.

This blog is SO good at pointing out what should have been obvious about AI for coding (Copilot and others) These tools are good for re-creating whatever they’ve been trained on. They are not what will create the next, better generation of frameworks, libraries, technologies.

Very true and very sad. It seems the broader world just got used to the situation in Ukraine and mostly ignores. The news coverage of the war has mostly disappeared in the last couple of years.

Am I just boring? My answer to everything with coding is basically, can we do less? Can we use what the framework gives us? I'm pretty vanilla.

For every dev who thinks "I could build this $30/month SaaS myself instead of paying for it" - the best thing you can do IS to build it! You learn 1. How much work it is (just for the base case) 2. Edge cases the SaaS silently takes care of 3. The cost (+pain!) of maintenance

Just played with the #agentic feature in #zed to augment my test suite on a class dealing with XML. The agent had an example to follow with a similar test on a sister class that handled JSON I had done myself. All it had to do is port the test and adapt it to the context of XML. Wait for it...
