I’m Canadian!

The world feels like it’s falling apart but this man and I celebrated our 24th wedding anniversary two days ago and for that I am grateful.

We decided not to go to the US this year and I’m an American citizen. We have a non binary kid, and my husband is an outspoken academic against the current US administration. I miss visiting my family and friends in Michigan but it just wasn’t safe for us.

Just got home after a month away. Drove 8,000km to Eastern Ontario and back.

We spent a few days I. Ottawa. My nerdy, politically aware teenagers loved it.

My puzzle “helper”, Frodo, went from sleepy to spicy in a matter of seconds.

I start feeling okay, I can handle this, it’ll be okay and then take a look at everything and bam, right back down in the despair.

It was a bit nippy with the -30C windchill on my walk today but the sun was calling me. That’s ice not fog on my glasses.

Having a dinner table conversation with my 16 year old son about how to have productive discussions with people you profoundly disagree with in a way that will more likely change hearts and minds not only makes me feel good about my parenting but also hope that they will have a positive impact.

I took a walk today despite the -36C windchill. The resilience of chickadees during winter always astounds me. I know many don’t make it through the winter but many do and I am hanging on to that in this time of fear and uncertainty.

Frodo is so helpful when I do puzzles.

I’ve been trying to avoid social media today but the grief, fear, and anger I feel today as my country of birth continues its slide to fascism is all encompassing. Take care of each other. Love each other. Now more than ever.

Today my oldest child becomes an adult. Eighteen years ago they entered the world a month too early and changed my world forever. The feelings of love and responsibility for this life was overwhelming and indescribable. I am so proud of the young person they have become.

What strikes me about the known victims is that all are elderly and/or disabled. A stark reminder of how climate change disproportionately impacts the vulnerable. People unable to evacuate quickly. www.bbc.com/news/article...

My youngest and I went to Elk Island National Park this morning. We saw two Great Grey Owls within the first 20 minutes. It’s been an amazing winter for Great Greys.

It was a frigid but gorgeous morning by the river.

I saw lots of new birds, aka lifers, in 2024. I think the most exciting for me though was the long eared owl I saw in April (didn’t get a picture of that one), and the Great Greys and Hawk owl I saw in December. #birds 🦉
