One almost wonders which transport mode has an engine. One of a thousand examples where bikes cover more altitude than cars. And often there are steep ramps. But hey, we're cycling for exercise, right?

I so wish that tyre and engine noise would be heard inside instead of outside of the vehicle. It's gruelling and mind-numbing to ride on a "perfectly safe" bike path next to a road full of cars.

Sustainable travel in Sweden: Trying to get myself and my bike from Linköping to somewhere outside of Borås. Train takes forever (and they don't really take bikes). Bus (Vy) says on homepage they don't take bikes. Solution: 4 regional trains (4 h trip), then ride 50K. Amazing.

That's a very popular way to use them. Most times it's not a mass killing, but even "punishment passes" are exactly this. In general, every time they threaten to drive through you because you made a mistake or didn't stick to the (car) rules, they're using it as a weapon. It's ubiquitous.

Given that operating dangerous machines like motor vehicles amongst people who never opted in to being exposed to those machines is a privilege, I'd say that any demonstration of not taking this danger seriously should lead to the licence being revoked. Control the danger.

The host in Lucca, IT, defaulted to thinking that travelling means flying or driving a car. When I took the train and rode my bike. And walked, of course.

In case anyone is interested - on my train trip home from Italy (avoiding flying) I missed the first connection with 1 min. Now on another train that, if on time, will arrive 10 min after my next connection has left. Thanks for nothing, governments that ruin trains benefiting flying and driving.

Spending a few days in the theoretically beautiful city of Lucca, Italy, and all I see is how cars ruin everything. It becomes so blatantly obvious in a place built before they existed to which lengths we go to accommodate them at the cost of everything else.

Overtaking of cyclists on rural roads - we recently got a 2y Vinnova project to assess the situation and look into improvements. It's a collaboration between VTI, Volvo Trucks, Scania, POC, STR, If, KTH, Chalmers, Trafikverket, several Swedish regions, UC Berkeley SafeTrec, University of New Mexico.

It makes such a difference to know (well, as much as you can trust drivers to obey no-entry-rules) that you don't have to expect cars, compared to having to expect them at any moment, even though none is coming.

Also, if people adapt their driving as they feel more protected, the risk for those outside of the car increases. So (disregarding the misleading "saving lives" phrasing for now), it may be that the unnecessary killing just gets shifted from customers to non-customers.

Last June I was an official at the Swedish nationals. A driver who disliked my redirecting him drove at me twice within the course of 1.5h, obviously as threat, to then go past me at speed with a very small margin. I reported to the police (had witnesses). They dismissed the charge. I appealed. ->

So very true! "Not everyone can cycle" is the first thing I always hear even from people doing research on transport - and who never even think this when it's about driving. On top of that, cycling must make you happy, healthy, beautiful, social and whatnot, otherwise forget it.

One reason I think it’s important to continue to highlight the disparity on our streets is that most people just don’t see it. Despite it being obvious to some, so many people don't have real clarity because we have done such an incredible job of normalizing this imbalance.

Was out riding my bike today, keeping nicely to the right like a good girl. No traffic in sight except one oncoming bus. The driver gave me the finger with a vengeance. Only because he can? What's wrong with ... people? Men? Drivers? Can't they just let me exist?

When passing me on my bike in an inappropriate place (icy, snowy, zero visibility, narrow) and in a hostile manner with a huge SUV, the driver chose to lean on his horn right next to me, startling me so much that I almost fell over. All I could do was some pathetic meaningless fist-shaking.
