Four Brent Cross postcards incoming…. One of my earliest childhood memories is of a long car trip in the mid-70s from Sutton to Brent Cross to see the new shopping centre. This domed roof with its little rectangles of colour created a lasting impression.

CarMart, West Hendon Broadway. Built in the late 1930s, the business (finishing off as Kenning), lasted until the late 1970s. The building that is on the site is now a Travelodge hotel. For a more detailed look, go to my Instagram account via this link

Jane Austen once visited Hendon in the 1810s to visit her newly wed niece Anna Austen Lefroy who along with her husband Ben stayed at Heriot House. Anna was a budding novellist and wrote to her aunt for advice The house, now long gone, is now Heriot Road, off Brent Street

nwlondontimemachineThe 1968 Peter Ustinov film, 'Hot Millions' featured a number of NW London locations, most notably Burnt Oak as well as Edgware.Looking at the following then and now images, its clear to see that although the shops have changed hands many times since and the vehicles on the road are from the past, the built environment has altered very little. Burnt Oak and Edgware featured quite regularly in film and TV shows in the 1950s and 1960s, and that was due to its proximity to the studios at nearby Borehamwood and Elstree. The 'anytown' feel of the locations were ideal. On this occasion 'Hot Millions' was made by MGM at Borehamwood. Did you know Hendon once had its own local currency of sorts? In the late 18th century it featured St Mary's Church Hendon, famed actor David Garrick (who had been Lord of the Manor) and a Greyhound (presumably for the Inn?)

Johnson's of Hendon, the photographic supplies manufacturer, had their chemicals factory at Hendon between 1914 to 1972. The site of the factory was cleared by the mid 1970s, and footprint of the plant is now covered by the Brent Cross Shopping Centre. The O/S map images date from the 1950s (NLS).
