My prompt this week for Rattle is to “Write a new rondeau that features an unusual noun that begins with the same letter of your first name.” I’m calling this a broken rondeau—in part because lf there’s a third “A” rhyme with the first iteration of the refrain.

A little over a century ago, Ezra Pound corralled a group known as the Imagists that would have a profound effect on poetry as we know it. A controversial figure, Pound explored and enlivened the economy of language and rich images that became founding principles of the group.

Here’s my prompt poem this week, which I’ll read live later in the Rattlecast, following Tim’s conversation with Kat Lehmann Blount tonight! My prompt this week is to: “Write a postcard poem to someone that would be very surprised to hear from you.”

Thank you, Katie. I’ve been doom scrolling since I woke up and your post reminded me that today is the day I start my self-funded camping residency at a pond in the Adirondacks. For the next two weeks, I’m going to be writing a poem. Hopefully many. Thank you for all you do for the poet community.

These episodes made me long for those with opposite opinions (a deacon and an atheist in this) to seek commonality instead of endlessly pointing out differences which, thanks to our negativity bias, are always easier to spot. I found it enlightening; hope you do too!

Preparing for the Prompt Lines, on the Rattlecast, to take flight tonight! Here's my poem, based on my prompt to: Write a poem with “self-portrait” in the title that features an odd bird. (Also based on one of my favorite childhood books, thanks Mom!)

I’ve loved writing our second haibun crown—this time as husband and wife! Here’s my last poem in the chapbook we’ve been writing all of National Poetry Month. Can’t wait to see how @timothygreen.bsky.social wraps it all full circle tomorrow with his haibun.

I should’ve guessed the wallpaper would paste itself into today’s poem for National Poetry Month’s haibun crown with @timothygreen.bsky.social

A poet named Janet dropped by, with limericks stacked to the sky. we laughed and we learned, as each verse was turned— tune in, let the rhyme amplify!

The single hardest topic for me to write about became the topic of today’s poem for our haibun crown @timothygreen.bsky.social

While in culinary school, I worked at a fancy restaurant in Washington, D.C. (now closed but it was called “Komi”). Today’s poem for our haibun crown references a scary time I had in the Dupont Circle metro, as well as alluding to my favorite poem of all time.

Continuing on with our haibun crown, Tim’s haiku yesterday included “fish,” so naturally I had to go in a poker direction. 🐠 is a derogatory term for a weak player. Here’s my poem for the day:

Day 16. I'd never heard of ghost craters—craters filled in with lava that make a kind of geological palimpsest—until @katiedozier.bsky.social's haiku yesterday. That was fun to play with.

I found “palimpsest” to be a particularly difficult word to have to include in my poem today (our haibun crown rules include that I have all the words from Tim’s brilliant haiku yesterday in the body of my poem today) because one of my absolute favorite poems, by George Bilgere, has that title.
