After a sushi happy hour, we’ll be hitting the theater this evening for “An Irish Goodbye,” a one-man show by nationally-known local comedian Jack Gallagher who quietly left town in 2024 after nearly four decades in Sacramento and moved back to his native Massachusetts to be near family.

Because we disconnect our car battery when we’re out of the country for months at a time it won’t pass smog right away when reconnected. We have to drive it 1-200 miles before the O2 sensors reset. So we’re going wine tasting today in a couple of neighboring counties to make that happen.

After driving back and forth across the state, spending 4 days packing and moving boxes and furniture, and then wrapping everything up including unpacking, refueling the U-haul truck and grocery shopping, we are both completely wiped out. I'm getting too old to be doing this. I need my rest!

We see restaurants and taprooms closing all over California because young people don’t drink alcohol as much anymore, they don’t go out as often post-Covid and don’t have as much disposable cash. I assume this is happening in other states. It doesn’t seem to be that way in Mexico, at least not yet.

Driving through central California in the early springtime listening to the #SFGiants on the radio is about as different from traveling through Mexico as it can get…except for the roadside taco stands. Always stop at those roadside taco stands. They’re the best.

Instead of watching the #SFGiants play on Netflix today on opening day, we’ll be driving across the state to help a family member move. Sure was a good investment we made in early December to fill our gas tank before we left for Mexico.

Woke up this morning in Sacramento where it's almost otherworldly quiet even with all the windows open and the price of gas is $4.99 per gallon. This evening we've the good fortune to be able to attend one of the neighborhood potlucks that are held monthly here. I'll bring a salad! #backinCalifornia

How I feel about going back to the US today. Trump's war in Iran has already driven up the price of gas so much that we're unable to find flights to Europe for the dates we want later in the year and the amount of points we need for flights if we could locate them has doubled.

As an OG green party member from California, the hubs is super bummed about the Cesar Chavez news. This is a unique situation for us. He usually pays little attention to the actual news. I don't think I've ever seen him like this before.

The author had accepted an invitation to attend and was on his way here when his trip was canceled and never rescheduled during the mayhem after the death of El Mencho. Today is a Mexican holiday and a lot of businesses are closed, including the recently restarted construction project next door. The neighborhood is quiet and we’re going to spend the day cleaning the apartment thoroughly so we can close it up and leave for awhile later in the week. #lifeinMexico

Attending my ladies book club today (finally!) where we’ll be discussing Cutting For Stone by Abraham Verghese. In keeping with the theme we’ll be dining on sandwiches and African peanut soup catered by the host’s neighbor. Meanwhile, the hubs will be day drinking on a cantina crawl with his boys.

We have to register our Mexican cellphone with a CURP (Clave Único de Registro) in order to keep using it and the on-line registration doesn’t work, like many on-line services here. Thus, we’re taking a trip to our local TelCel office and then to the farmacía to refill a couple of prescriptions.

Today is International Women’s Day and the annual march scheduled to begin in el centro has in the past few years devolved into vandalism of a lot of property and defacement of the city with spray paint and graffiti. Women have a lot to be angry about and today they will show it. #lifeinMexico

We'll be spending our Saturday evening attending the annual general meeting of Democrats Abroad Guadalajara. One friend is the chapter president, another who will be speaking is the national DA membership chair. Our chef friends will be catering the refreshments and there will be wine. #GOTVMexico

We couldn’t find a carnicería open yesterday so we’re going to try again today either before or after we have carne en su jugo with our lunch group. Although I’m not too excited about the idea of dining with a group of 40 people, it’ll be good to see friends. #lifeinMexico

Late this afternoon we had a delivery from our favorite local butcher who dropped off half a rack of fresh spare ribs which the hubs is now grilling on the balcony. I believe this calls for an old fashioned or two while we wait for them to cook.
