I posted this yesterday, but today is the 10th anniversary of Amos Johnson’s passing. It’s a long thread but his story worth it.

Johnson traveled to Germany once again, this time facing Sonny Liston who was looking to make his comeback after losses to Ali. Liston made quick work of Johnson, KO'ing him in three rounds.

Knowing no other way, he continued forward. He traveled to Liverpool to face Brian London. Johnson was DQ'd in the 7th round for head butting. The loss threatened to slow the momentum Johnson had worked so hard to build. His manager still had eyes on an Ali fight.

Wins over Ali and Cooper - Johnson's ring campaign was at its peak. But boxing remains undefeated as the cruelest sport. The Cooper fight only earned him $1500. A few months later, he was working odd jobs around Medina and papers were calling him boxing's forgotten man.

Again in enemy territory, Johnson defeated British champion Henry Cooper in London, 1965. This put Johnson securely into the top ten rankings. A shot at Ali's title seemed in sight.

Between fights, Johnson worked as sparring partner for Canadian strong man George Chuvalo, who'd never been knocked down in a fight. Johnson claimed he dropped Chuvalo while sparring, one more line while making the case for himself.

Rademacher had landed his fight with Patterson mainly because of Cus D'Amato's eccentricities. Bad luck for Johnson: Ali's Louisville backers weren't as open. Rademacher was stymied. Still, Johnson was winning. A draw with Mildenberger in Germany was considered a W by most.
