This was essentially the explanation I got from my kid’s English teacher about why excepts are good. Also that so many students don’t have the stamina for a whole book. I think we don’t trust kids enough to build it.

I’m the parent who asked at every NYC high school tour, “Do you read books?” The answers were crushing. My kid ended up in a school that has books everywhere. But they’re not being read.
