VWT’s Bat Team led a workshop at the recent Southwest Bat Conference to highlight its work to ensure horseshoe bat habitats are more resilient. Enhancing existing roosts and creating new purpose-built roosts are key strategies to help the species recover from declines. @batconservation.bsky.social

#MammalWeek This week we carried out the first bat box check of the year for our #Bechstein’s bat ringing project. We don’t always find them this early, so we were pleased to discover six bats cosied together during our checks — a promising start to the season! Huge thanks to our volunteers.

We had a fab day at one of our bat reserves in Wales, which is home to around 500 lesser horseshoe bats. With the help of our fantastic #volunteers, we carried out maintenance tasks, pruned fruit trees and planted 24 new trees to provide more cover and bring in insects for the bats to feed on!

We’re delighted to welcome Prof Rosie Hails as VWT Trustee. Rosie is Nature, Land+Evidence Director at @nationaltrust.org.uk and will be VWT’s Chair of Trustees in Dec. One of #MartensOnTheMove volunteers had a lovely surprise on Christmas Day when they recorded a pine marten visiting their feeder in our Brechfa Monitoring Hub. The feeder was put up in November and this is the first time the volunteer has recorded a marten! #NationalLotteryHeritageFund
