What is the most creative and inspiring personality research paper from the last few years that I could recommend to students to show how breakthroughs happen?

We show how personality traits' familial transmission is usually misestimated (due to single-method biases) and often misunderstood (confusing non-additive transmission that only makes identical twins alike with transmission that makes ordinary relatives alike). Regional personality trait differences are tiny in both small and large countries. You cannot say anything about someone's personality based on where they live. But the tiny regional differences that exist may have some meaningful correlates. doi.org/10.1111/jopy...

If I were designing a personality cohort study and had to choose between a cross-sectional design with different assessment methods (e.g., self + informant reports) and longitudinal self-report assessments (cannot have both!), I would choose multiple methods over multiple time points.

Personality researchers often forget that only ~50% of self-report trait variance is demonstrably valid—eg confirmed by a close other. About 10-15% is random error, while most of the rest is due to stable response biases and idiosyncratic item interpretations—reliable but invalid variance.
