Permanent DST would put sunrise in WA past 8am (when most work/school begins) for 3–4 months every year. Millions would suffer negative consequences to mental health, physical health, and safety. It was a deadly failure in 1974. This is not an “edge case”.

Clocks are tools for timekeeping and for navigation. Longitude determines time, and therefore time can reveal longitude.

When we start work/school at 8am Daylight Saving Time, we’re actually starting at 7am Standard Time. DST is a hidden mandate to wake earlier and sleep less.

Most Americans wake by 6:30am to start work or school by 8am. All humans need sunlight in morning the most. Permanent DST failed nationwide when last tried. 8:23am sunrise is far too late for health, safety, education, and productivity.

We are on Standard Time now, not DST. Clocks move ahead to DST one hour on the first Sunday in March. Standard Time preserves essential morning light that chronobiology experts and sleep doctors say is essential for circadian alignment and biorhythmic regulation.

Ideally, being off mean solar time by 30 min-1 hour is best for our circadian rhythm, but as you can see from the US gerrymandered time zones, it is quite skewed. I lived western Michigan where it should be in central time. When DST kicked in, we were thrown off even more. It's not about purity.

Daylight Saving Time was created by lobbyists for golf and shopping. The majority of Americans oppose it, and the plurality support permanent Standard Time (not permanent DST).
