Those of you who were school age in the mid ‘70s should remember when, in order to “save” energy, DST was enacted in February. I hated it. Public transportation in the dark. Walking down busy streets in the dark. Standard time is better.

I was in Iowa a few days this week. I woke naturally around 6am Standard Time, near dawn, a half hour before sunrise, same as I do in Arizona. But the clock said 7am Daylight Saving Time. School buses were already on the street. DST forces early waking by alarm, against health.

I feel subtly sleepier as sunlight grows seasonally scanter. Permanent Daylight Saving Time—a mandate to wake an hour early all winter—would not help.
