If anyone should be made to volunteer for civic good it should be the people who have hours of spare time to put flags up and paint roundabouts.

Had a very enjoyable swan around Edward Burra at Tate Britain. What a great life he had! Hanging out with bohos, sailors and musicians in France, Harlem, Spain and Mexico in the 20’s and 30’s. Home in pretty East Sussex. Became more political with age. Lived to be 71, a good run, a fine legacy.

A personal ripple of horror went through me at the news of Grizzly Kennedy’s destruction of mRNA vax research. Without this sophisticated tool, millions more will get Long Covid. After 5 years of the blasted thing I can tell you it is a life shattering event. The U.S. are destroying their people.

I prosecute and defend the most serious sexual offences in our courts. The overwhelming majority of offenders are British-born. Overwhelmingly the victim is someone known to them, either a partner or relative. Anybody purporting to care about protecting women might start there.

There’s an increasing number of Labour politicians who could be considered the least likely Labourites ever but, even with the strong competition of Sir Keir Starmer, I think the winner is Lord Peter Mandelson, just revealed as having called Epstein ‘my best pal’ in the infamous birthday book.

Something that would markedly improve the mental health of the nation would be if we didn’t have to sit on a phone for an hour listening to shitty musak to get through to the DWP (or any state institution that is essential to the functioning of a democracy but which doesn’t employ enough staff).

With certain caveats, I like Jeremy Corbyn and think he’s a principled and egalitarian person, but starting a new party when you’re not young anymore and kind of yesterday’s man, and with the right wing media ready to slice you up, does not have a promising outlook.
