A reminder that destroying historic/heritage sites is a war crime. It is, to put it bluntly, a terrorist tactic, deployed by deplorable groups such as the Taliban (Bamiyan Buddhas) and ISIS (Palmyra).

Just to be clear, this is extremely uncool. Context is crucial to all archaeology, but ESPECIALLY petroglyphs. Once displaced, important properties of this heritage can no longer be reconstructed.

Although maintaining the status quo doesn't feel like much of a victory, it is also likely the limit of the court's power and the best possible outcome.

I get tired of saying it, but I’ll say it again: the nature of oppression in America is that they workshop it first on Black, Latino, Asian & Native people. But it is always, in the end, coming for everyone.

Unless I am sorely mistaken about the rotation rate of the Earth, 2m 30s is a far shorter span of time than "overnight." Although supposing this is in the Arctic Circle, the time of year (and whether we define "night" by rotational position vs. apparent sunset) becomes relevant.

Elon Musk's DOGE was not a failure - for the people behind Elon. Sure, it cut no costs and ruined Elon's reputation, but it exfiltrated data from every federal agency and delivered it to Peter Thiel's Palantir, which then created the app ICE agents are using to target immigrant neighborhoods. 1/

tl;dr: real archaeology doesn't fit classic game mechanics well, but there's no reason a faithful representation can't be done! The article is actually quite good so I encourage a read. For my 2-cents, I think archaeogaming from a perspective of answering questions as opposed to "shoot-&-loot" works

The difference between the recent WA flooding and the current floods in Marin is that the people affected in WA were at least mostly rural/outdoorsy people with some basic life skills, whereas most people in Marin are useless rich techies that can't buy their own groceries... it's gotta be CHAOS lol

One of the things I love about Arendt is that through observation and insight, she managed to piss off just about everyone. She remains a role model for observation and critical thinking, despite a world full of the very same foolishness she warned us about.

Someone please school me on ways to detect wood-that-once-was. I do find that indirect evidence of woodworking can be underreported, but tbf checking margins of shell fragments for use wear (as an example) is not the most intuitive.
