I appreciate that podcasts can make leaders accessible in deeper ways via long form interviews, but that deeper access can really cut both ways. I listened to a 55 min interview with Pierre Poilievre this morning (on The Knowledge Project) and I’m really glad he’s not PM.

Good! Schemes for regulating gas prices end up increasing the cost to the public, either via artificially high base prices to absorb market variations, or through government subsidies to the industry to absorb excess costs. I don’t mind politicians pulling back on promises that lead to bad policy.

This morning my daughter was worried she might get bullied. We assured her we wouldn't let that happen and it helped some. Then I told her "The world is hard; let's stay soft and grow strong" and I guess that's my advice for all of us this coming year.

Saw a vehicle this morning pull a U-turn and take two wheels up onto the curb and halfway across the sidewalk on Osborne. Just a normal commute in Winnipeg! Gird your loins, pedestrians!

Over the past two years in Winnipeg, 25 pedestrians and cyclists have been killed in motor vehicle collisions. More than one per month. When do we start genuinely prioritizing safety over vehicle speed in our street design?

I’ve seen a lot of very funny memes about the Mamdani/Trump meeting and I just want to say: 1) good job on the memes, 10/10 2) a tremendous number of people with fundamentally opposing politics want life to be affordable and to build enough housing for everyone to live in

Another data point for the weirdness of our political moment - there is a lot of energy in a relatively small far-right movement that is deeply disconnected from the values held by the majority of people. 43% of any party wants to bring back the stocks in 2025? That movement is gonna implode hard.

They just keep on stacking up more and more reasons to travel elsewhere

I appreciate why this is being done in a (relative) hurry and why the folks designing it have ended up proposing what they have… but as a cyclist and a driver that frequents this area I really don’t love what’s being offered here. I’d love to see a more drastic change.

The factional grifters will hate this, but the Mamdani-Spanberger-Sherrill axis actually suggests the outlines of a broad, emerging Dem coalition organized around both anti-Trump *and* affordability politics, not a party bitterly divided against itself.

Watching this travesty has reminded me that in elementary school we did a musical that was loosely based on Oliver Twist and centered most of the action on a baseball team called the “Artful Dodgers”. This is too much baseball for my brain. End it.
