The coup of 1964 continues in Brazilâs military schools
Brazilian writer Urariano Mota, who has written extensively about the years of dictatorship (1964 to 1985), reflects on its continued legacy through what is taught in the countryâs military schools. Perhaps a better title would be âThe teaching of false history in Brazil's military schoolsâ. I mean: I think of the young people in the military colleges, ardent young men and women, having to an empty and violating history, which they call the History of Brazil - Empire and Republic, from a Marechal Trompowsky Collection, from the Army Library.

Mike Phipps reviews A Thousand Miracles: From Surviving the Holocaust to Judging Genocide, by Theodor Meron, published by Hurst. Theodor Meronâs memoir follows an extraordinary journey â from the CzÄstochowa ghetto and a Nazi forced-labour camp to the founding of the International Criminal Court, the landmark genocide trials of Rwanda and former Yugoslavia, and his recent role advising the ICC on cases in Israel and Gaza. Meronâs happy childhood was cut short at the age of nine when the Nazis invaded Poland. Fleeing with what they could carry, his family headed first east, then southwest, on foot, sheltering in ditches when German planes attacked.

Restore democracy to London Labour!
There are two key reasons for Labourâs dire performance in Londonâs local elections. One was the failings of Keir Starmerâs government. The second was the appalling damage to our Party by the factional antics of the Labour Together clique that currently runs our Party. Both need addressing. To combat this hyper-factionalism, a broad coalition of progressives have come together to run for London's Regional Executive Committee. Their full statement is below. Emine Ibrahim, who is running on the slate as a London-wide candidate, said: âHelp us pull the London Labour Party back from the edge.

Why Not Now, Andy?
Murad Qureshi puts the urgent case for a Land Value Tax. As the race to shape the future of our Party and our country intensifies, any serious contender for the leadership must confront a brutal triad of economic realities. We are looking down the barrel of non-existent economic growth, a tight grip by bond markets on sovereign policy, and a massive, decades-long transfer of wealth away from those who work for a living toward those who simply own assets. Jonathan Portes recently outlined several paths a new leader could take to shift the politics of growth.

Ahead of this yearâs Orgreave Anniversary March and Rally, Paul Winter recalls the turning point of the 1984-5 minersâ strike. Orgreave was two thirds of my life ago, but I have to talk about my life before and after to sum it up. I was brought up on a huge council estate near Barnsley. Such was the community in the 1960s and 1970s I can name nearly the entire street. The kids played and the adults socialised together as a proper community. The boom period was after the strikes my Dad participated in, in 1972 and 1974.

Susan Press reports from the front line of Andy Burnhamâs campaign. As by-elections go, the stakes for this one couldn't be higher. If Andy Burnham wins, he will probably be not just the next leader of the Labour Party but Prime Minister. If he loses, his Parliamentary ambitions are probably at an end and Labour's death spiral is likely to continue. The recent local election results were bad everywhere for the Party but much, much worse in Makerfield where Reform won all eight wards up for election and Labour took just 23 per cent of the vote.

Welsh Labour at a crossroads
Mick Antoniw outlines his view on the future of the Welsh Labour Party and Welsh democracy. A Labour Hub long read. This is a difficult article for me to write, but in light of the recent disastrous election results for Welsh Labour, and Labour across the UK, it is time for the sort of honest and ruthlessly frank analysis and assessment of these results and what they mean for Wales and UK Labour. Despite all the longstanding omens and warning signs over the past decade, I am not yet confident that it is ready to contemplate and implement the sort of changes in politics and direction that I believe need to be taken if the results are not to lead to a permanent political realignment of Welsh centre-left politics.

By the Venezuela Solidarity Campaign Over 13,000 people have now signed a petition urging the UK to give back over 30 tonnes of Venezuelan gold to Venezuela, which is currently being held in the Bank of England, despite the Latin American nation requesting its return. The gold currently has a value of ÂŁ3.5bn (US $4.74 bn.) The surge in support for the petition, initiated by the Venezuela Solidarity Campaign, comes at a time when leading figures in the Venezuelan Government and civil society have called for the gold to be returned as part of international campaigning for assets to be returned to the country and sanctions to be lifted.

Average household energy bills will rise by ÂŁ221 from 1st July, a 13.5% increase on the previous quarter and 79% higher than before the energy crisis began in winter 2020/21, according to figures confirmed by Ofgem. The increase is driven primarily by the cost of gas, with unit rates up 28% on the last quarter and 16% higher than a year ago, a direct consequence of the impact of the US-Israeli conflict with Iran. The End Fuel Poverty Coalition has warned that households cannot afford a summer of suspense while Ministers finalise their plans for winter support.

âI lived in anguishâ: talking about the Brazilian dictatorship to a young student
Urariano Mota was emailed by a school student some questions about his experience of living under the Brazilian dictatorship, which lasted from 1964 to 1985. He shares his answers here. Q: What was your daily life like during the military government in Brazil? Did the dictatorship affect any aspect of your daily life or that of your family? A: Terrible. Everyday life was a nightmare. I went to live in a boarding house, where I sheltered a persecuted comrade, which was extremely risky because if he were caught, we would both be arrested, tortured, and killed.

Beware the Extreme Centre
Tony Blairâs new essay channels what the global billionaire elite wants for Britain. Michael Calderbank finds it shockingly reactionary. Tony Blairâs connection to the British labour movement has always been incredibly tenuous, but whatever lip-service he once paid to it has long since been sidelined in favour of a headlong infatuation with wealth and power. His advice to the Labour Party is offered not as someone steeped in its values, but as a strategist for global capital looking at how the Party might be made into an effective instrument to deliver the agenda of billionaires. Â

Housing campaign group slams government over âgroundless faithâ in broken property system as survey exposes systemic service charge abuse
Housing campaign group SHAC has today published research resoundingly debunking Housing Secretary Matthew Pennycook's claims that current systems protect residents from rampant service charge abuse. In an official parliamentary response on 2nd April 2026, Matthew Pennycook rejected calls to cap skyrocketing service charges. The Minister claimed that current legal systems such as the First-Tier Property Tribunal afford adequate protection for residents to contest unfair bills. However, explosive new data from a SHAC survey of 829 tenants and residents proves the Minister is entirely wrong. The findings expose a broken regulatory vacuum where landlords exploit residents with impunity, driving increasing numbers of desperate tenants to collectively withhold their payments.

The anxious generation that someone made anxious
Simon Pearson reflects on three diagnoses, one statistical baseline, and a shared refusal to name what actually happened to the economy that was supposed to absorb a generation. Alan Milburn has a diagnosis. Close to a million young people are not in education, employment or training, and the reason, his interim report will say, is that they have been rewired. Smartphones have restructured how they sleep, how they concentrate, how they manage stress. They are not snowflakes, Milburn insists. They are an anxious generation, and businesses must adapt by offering pastoral care and flexibility.

Turkeyâs Democratic Crisis Is Deepening â and The World Should Pay Attention
The policeâs storming of Turkeyâs main opposition party headquarters raises fresh concerns about the health of the countryâs democracy, argues Fatma Nur YoÄuran. The recent police intervention around the Republican Peopleâs Party (CHP) Â headquarters marks another alarming step in Turkeyâs democratic decline. For many outside Turkey, these events may appear to be isolated political tensions. But for millions of Turkish citizens, especially young people, they represent something much larger: the gradual erosion of democratic institutions, judicial independence, and political pluralism under an increasingly centralised system of power. Over the past several years, opposition politicians, journalists, academics and activists have faced mounting pressure.

Each week there is a massive attack of drones and missiles. Many are shot down, some get through and the debris from others causes death and injury. Despite this life goes on, meetings take place and there is an ironic and strange normalcy after every attack. Last week was the annual Congress of the Independent Trade Union of the Miners of Ukraine (NGPU).

What is happening in Bolivia?
Claudia Turbet-Delof explains the background to the current mass protests rocking Bolivia. This short piece will tell you what the mainstream media and much of the international press are choosing to not show the world: images of state violence against peaceful marches of campesinos, miners, teachers, older people and Indigenous communities demanding the resignation of President Rodrigo Paz. Their demands respond to the deep economic crisis and attacks on constitutional rights the Bolivian people are experiencing since Paz came to power six months ago. Instead, many headlines â including seemingly progressive media â focus first on isolated clashes or âviolence against police,â reproducing the same narrative promoted by right-wing media and foreign interests seeking to delegitimise popular resistance.

Participants from the Global Sumud Flotilla have provided harrowing testimony about the widespread abuse, assault and torture they suffered when Israeli forces intercepted their peaceful aid convoy to Palestine in international waters. Flotilla members say rubber bullets were fired at close range, tasers were applied to the face and upper body and stun grenades were thrown into groups of detainees. People were held in stress positions for hours under bright lights, hijabs were forcibly removed and various forms of sexual violence were deployed by Israeli forces. These included humiliating strip searches, sexual taunting, groping and pulling of genitals and multiple accounts of rape.

To what extent has his experience as Greater Manchester Mayor prepared Labourâs Makerfield by-election candidate to be a transformative Prime Minister? asks Mike Phipps. A life entirely in politics Andy Burnham joined the Labour Party at 15. A Cambridge graduate, he worked as a researcher for Tessa Jowell MP, a parliamentary officer for the NHS Confederation and an administrator with the Football Task Force for a year. From 1998 to 2001, he was a special adviser to Labourâs Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, before becoming MP for Leigh in Greater Manchester in 2001.

Labour did exactly the same over rent controls - condemned it when the Greens advocated it, then it was leaked that Reeves was considering it too! It's what happens when you govern by comms not policy.

The scale of this defeat was made in Wales
Senedd Member Mike Hedges reflects on May 7thâs election results in Wales. The result of the 2026 Senedd election was somewhere between very disappointing and disastrous for Labour in Wales. The party moved from thirty out of 60 seats in 2021 to nine out of 96 in 2026, with no seats west of Loughor bridge and only one in north Wales. While Labour did very badly in council elections in England, losing almost 1,500 seats, the result in Wales was substantially worse. I estimate that if the result had mirrored England, then the Labour Party in Wales would have dropped from an estimated 44 to 18 to 20 seats.

Thames Water workers have had two years of uncertainty. A short-term private sector fix will not cut it. Water needs long term stability to clean up the environment and guarantee jobs. We need to bring Thames Water back into public ownership.

The precariat election: Ignoring class and insecurity imperils Labour
Guy Standing reflects on who is deserting Labour, where their votes are going and whether the Party is rescuable. The precariat has just spoken, and the commentariat did not notice. The precariat is todayâs mass âworking classâ, defined in three dimensions â distinctive relations of production, distinctive relations of distribution and distinctive relations to the state. Failing to understand its character as a âdangerous classâ is at the heart of the failure of all centre-left political parties to mobilise support from it. The precariat is âdangerousâ because it does not support old orthodox political norms.
